Samsung Neo QLED

Sometimes things just happen, and that's what happened to me this week ...

I was planning to start this new blog with an explanatory series on high-fidelity audio listening, but here I am, yesterday I attended a training session at Samsung and what I learned there is worth sharing "right away"!

It is well known that the past year has been one that has totally changed our lives. There are many negatives, but there are also some good points to highlight...

Home entertainment has been booming as most of us have renewed some of the audiovisual equipment we own. The biggest increase was in the purchase of high-end TVs as everyone's reduced spending on outdoor and travel equipment was redirected in this direction. Samsung, which has been the largest TV manufacturer for 15 years now, sold phenomenal amounts of performance TVs in 2020. In simple terms, they have made more money and therefore have been able to invest heavily in research and development (R&D).

STAY WITH ME HERE, BECAUSE THE NEWS IS REALLY EXCITING!

Let's start!

  • The reinvention of QLED: NEO-QLED with QUANTUM MATRIX PRO TECHNOLOGY

Four series benefit from this technological breakthrough: the 8K with the QN800 and 900 and the new 4K TVs of the QN85 and 90 series...

3 things to remember about the NEO-QLED:

1) The Quantum Mini LED offering greater control of the image backlight.

Mini LEDs are 1/40th the size of an LED it replaces! 40 times smaller! Thanks to the new AI (artificial intelligence with neural capacity) processor, the control of the screen matrix will be absolute, allowing for micro-management of light and dark areas, passing through the entire palette in between! Imagine a vast landscape, with LED Minis, where every shade can be detected to perfection...

2) Contrast enhancement in deep blacks 12 bit

This will result in a gradation of the dark areas in 4096 levels, for night scenes, without any loss of detail. As an example: We will see the bark of a tree in a night scene; in this photo, the shades in the sky and buildings have much more detail.

3) Local adaptive brightness enhancement :

This new technology will make it possible to use energy available in a dark area to "give" it to a lighter area. An example for understanding: a firework display at night. The TV will save the energy it does not send to the Mini-LEDs of the night sky portion and allocate it to the Mini-LEDs of the fireworks themselves. The result will be a more realistic reproduction of the fireworks display at night...

  • The key word in 2021:AI for Artificial Intelligence GEN3

In 2019, Samsung offered us a colour correction and clarity system that was evaluated and corrected in real time. This technology allowed you to compare the images of your broadcasts to a map of thousands of images in memory so that you could guide your TV's "on-board computer" in selecting hues, grayscale, contrast and so on! The new 8K models had this futuristic feature...

With the introduction of more than double the number of 8K models in 2020, Samsung added neural capability to its 8K processor while the 4K models received the "AI" processor of the previous year's 8K.

What is neural AI?

A: Neural capacity now allows the TV 'brain' to analyse images without the need to compare copies in memory to guide that analysis. The possibilities are now almost infinite, being limited only by the speed of execution, which brings us to 2021!

The Samsung processor in this year's 8K has 16 (yes, sixteen!) neural processors!

The 4K 2021 NEO-QLED range will have the neural AI system of the 8K 2020.

Good! I hope I haven't lost too many of you! I'm now going to explain to you everything that this famous "neural" processor does

  • Enhanced colours: Depending on the image presented, the hue is corrected for better realism. For example, a bottle green is totally different in shade than the green of greenery or a piece of machinery. To feel in place, you need to recognise these shades and the processor does this for you.
  • Higher Contrast: This is very important when viewing dark scenes. An ordinary TV will tend to lose detail in a grey background, Samsung's HDR10+, as well as allowing greater vibrancy to the colours, also helps to tone down the grey areas of the TV picture.
  • Adaptive backlighting : The screen of a QLED TV has LED lighting that adapts to the brightness requirements. The brighter it is, the more intense the backlighting becomes. But when we're in front of a night sky, the screen has to be almost turned off. The AI takes care of everything.

  • 4K or 8K enhancement depending on the model: The difference that AI makes here is very important, as not all content is 4K or 8K. With powerful processes, the new 2021s with neural capability will be able to finely reproduce the details lost in lower resolutions. (I digress to let you know that YouTube is now streaming 8K content, the upcoming Olympics will be broadcast in 8K, and many of the new game consoles will be compatible and offer it soon)
